Class II Biological Safety Cabinets:

Class II biological safety cabinets are the most commonly used type of biological safety cabinet in laboratory settings. They provide personnel, sample, and environmental protection by combining the functions of HEPA filtration and inward airflow with a protective air barrier. Class II cabinets are divided into four types (A1, A2, B1, and B2) based on the level of protection they offer and the type of work they are designed for.

Class II A1 cabinets recirculate 70% of the air inside the cabinet, while the remaining 30% is exhausted out of the building. Class II A2 cabinets exhaust 100% of the air outside, providing better protection for personnel and the environment. These cabinets feature a double-wall construction with negative pressure, a front access opening with a protective air barrier, and a lower exhaust volume than Class I cabinets to create a sterile work environment. Class II biological safety cabinets are used for a wide range of applications, including cell culture, tissue culture, and microbial work involving infectious agents, human pathogens, and biohazardous materials. They provide protection against biological, chemical, and radioactive hazards and are equipped with features such as UV sterilization, alarms, and remote access controls for added safety.

Class III Biological Safety Cabinets:

Class III biological safety cabinets are the most advanced and highest level of containment for working with extremely hazardous biological agents, such as Ebola virus, anthrax, or tuberculosis. These cabinets are designed for maximum protection of personnel, samples, and the environment, with airtight construction and total containment of the work area. Class III cabinets are typically used in high-containment laboratories, biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) facilities, and research settings where the risk of exposure to deadly pathogens is high.

Class III cabinets are completely enclosed and have multiple HEPA filters to provide a controlled environment with negative pressure, preventing the release of airborne contaminants. Personnel access the cabinet through a double-door airlock system with integrated gloves, ensuring a secure containment barrier. Class III biological safety cabinets are suitable for working with infectious agents that require the highest level of containment and protection, such as emerging diseases, bioterrorism threats, and novel pathogens.
